This has been a memorable year in Hardy studies, heralded by Herbert F. Tucker's Epic: Britain's Heroic Muse: 1700-1910 (Oxford Univ. Press, 2008) which, together with a comprehensive examination of the theory, tradition, and transformation of the epic genre in the long nineteenth-century, features a magnificent section on The Dynasts. Tucker's Epic arrived on my desk at the very last minute last year, as I was writing up the 2008 Years Work, and, being the vast tome that it is, there was neither space nor time for including observations on it in my 2008 report. For Hardyans this is possibly the work of the year providing, as it does, the first literary history of epic poetry in Britain between the Napoleonic Wars (Hardy's deepest historico-politico passion), and the First World War-the ultimate test of his meliorism. WWI broke Hardy's heart. His wife, Florence Emily, speaks of his unremitting depression during the years, 1914-18, although it was not until a decade later that he wrote the bitterly sardonic lines:
